  • House Security System – Should I Have One?

Should I Have a House Security System?

    Author: David Deffenbaugh

That’s a good question. It deserves a good answer.

Think about this: on a larger scale, isn’t the local police and/or sheriff’s department a measure of home security provided by the local community and funded by your taxes? Apparently we think it’s important on that level. But these obviously have their limitations, don’t they? It would be great if a policeman would be parked outside of my house every night – that would sure deter any burglars! But that isn’t possible. Read the rest of this entry »

  • Car Seat Safety

A child car seat is used for your child’s safety and comfort. Sure you know how to fit the child seat to the car and it looks safe, but do you know how to check your child is safe and what you can do to increase your child’s safety? Below I have listed a few hints and tips:

First of all, before even buying travel child seats, you should make sure it is suitable for your child’s height and weight.

Don’t just install the seat with your own knowledge, read the manufacturer’s manual before fitting the child car seat and always follow the steps in the manual. The manual should give you clear instructions on how to fit the child car seat.

Allow plenty of time when fitting the child seat to ensure it is fitted correctly. This is something that should never be done in a hurry.

Always consider the safest position in the car to fit the travel child seats to. The safest position for your child in the event of an accident is the center of the back seat as long as your car seat is approved to be used with the type of seat belt fitted in the back center seat in your car. The second safest position is the rear left hand position (behind the front passenger seat) as it is furthest away from other cars on the road. The third safest position is the rear right hand position (behind the driver’s seat). Then the fourth safest being the front passenger seat.

It is the law that you do not place rear facing infant car seats in the front seat of the car if there is an active airbag. It is recommended not to put rear facing infant car seats in the front seat even if the airbag is de-activated as there is still a potential risk that it could go off.

Make sure the travel child seats is stable and does not move more than an inch forward or side to side.

Make sure the harness of the car seat holds your child securely. You should only be able to fit one or two fingers between your child’s body and the harness. If there is still space when you do this the harness is too loose.

If you think the child seat isn’t secure enough, re-tighten the seat belt and retest the tightness of the child seat. If you cannot get the seat secure enough, take it to your local garage for inspection.
